Stewardship and Education in the Watstonville Sloughs
Within two years of acquisition the Land Trust will develop a comprehensive stewardship, restoration, and education plan to enhance the already high natural resources of the area and improve water quality. Among the provisions we'll consider as part of this plan:
- pulling back the "ag footprint" adjacent to wetlands and returning a larger buffer area to natural vegetation;
- retiring marginal often flooded farmland and restoring it to wetland habitat;
- reducing sediment input into the wetlands and improve water quality by installing buffer areas and filtration swales;
- wetlands education and restoration training for local students through Watsonville Wetlands Watch and the Fitz Wetlands Educational Resource Center;
- increased engagement in stewardship and wetland protection practices with farmers by demonstrating best management practices on the farmland.
Many of these projects will involve working with a variety of partners, including Watsonville Wetland Watch, the Resources Conservation District, and the Elkhorn Slough Foundation.
