Land Protection in the Pajaro Valley
This land is a stone's throw away from Watsonville. This proximity and ocean views make this land vulnerable to development when Watsonville's growth control Measure U expires. The Land Trust believes that the smart way to protect land is before development is imminent and protection more expensive. That's why we have reached agreements with four Pajaro Valley landowners to protect 1,000 acres of prime farmland – even though there is no immediate threat of development to these farms.
One of the landowners who is protecting land he co-owns with the Borina Foundation is Miles Reiter, the CEO of Driscoll's. Here's how he put it in 2007: "You need to act before it (the land) is threatened. Once the threat is at the door, it's too late. For the Pajaro Valley the time to do something is now, not later. Later is too late."
