The Great Land & Trail Campaign is four campaigns in one. There are more than a dozen projects in the campaign, spread throughout the county. In the following slides we’ll give you an overview of the four campaigns and the projects in each one. You can support all of them, or only one, or any combination you’d like.
Coastal Rail Trail
The Coastal Rail Trail is a 32-mile paved bike and pedestrian path along the rail line, from Davenport to Watsonville. Think of it as a road without cars, an 8-foot paved path with 2-foot unpaved buffers on either side. It will provide a safe (no cars), easy (no hills), beautiful (lots of ocean views) way for people of all ages to get around our county. It is within a mile of 45 schools, 92 parks, and half the county’s population. We believe it will transform the way people, locals and visitors, get around our county.
Protect Wildlife & Wildlands
Our goal is to build a Wildlife Tunnel under Highway 17 at Laurel Curve. To do this, we need to protect more than 460 acres of land on either side. We have already protected 290 acres east of the highway. In the coming year, we will protect another 170 acres west of the highway and work with Caltrans to get the tunnel built ASAP. We will also protect additional wildlands necessary for the survival of wildlife in our county.
Build New Trails
The Land Trust plans to build more than 45 miles of NEW trails – the biggest addition to our county’s 240-mile trail system in decades. The 38 miles of trails on San Vicente Redwoods will include 21 miles of biking trails and 17 miles for hiking and horse-back riding. The five miles of trails through our Watsonville Slough Farm will connect to the Coastal Rail Trail. We will also build three miles of trails through the Glenwood Preserve in Scotts Valley.
The Land Trust has protected 1,350 acres of Pajaro Valley farmland in the past six years and plans to protect another 400 acres in the next few years. We will also explore how to play a larger role in addressing the Pajaro Valley’s water problems, focusing on the possibility of turning College Lake into a recharge and water storage facility.
The Great Land & Trail Campaign
All this will cost more than $43 million. Over half of that will come from foundation and government grants – IF we can raise $20 million to match those funds. You can help—
